Utu Consulting

About Me

About Me

I founded Utu Consulting, LLC to support mission-driven organizations in building people practices that are thoughtful, sustainable, and aligned with their values. Grounded in the Swahili philosophy of Utu, my work centers shared humanity, dignity, and responsibility in organizational life.

I bring over 15 years of experience in organizational development and applied HR practice within nonprofit and mission-driven organizations. Much of my work has focused on strengthening people, systems, and HR capacity in environments where resources are limited or evolving. I partner closely with leaders to introduce structure, clarify roles, and design people practices that are both practical and sustainable.

Neema Mbonela

Founder and Director

In addition to interim leadership and advisory work, I provide structured one-on-one coaching for leaders navigating complexity, transition, and authority. This work draws on my training in counseling and organizational psychology, integrating behavioral insight with systems thinking to support clear, grounded decision-making.

Before founding Utu Consulting, I worked in HR and organizational development roles within nonprofit and mission-driven organizations, as well as in executive search. These experiences continue to shape my systems-oriented and pragmatic approach to advisory and interim leadership work.

My education includes a BA in International Business, an MBA, an MA in Mental Health Counseling, and graduate coursework in organizational psychology. I am a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC). My work integrates systems thinking with behavioral research and applied practice, with an emphasis on clarity, consistency, and human- centered decision-making.

While I currently call New Jersey home, I am a proud Mswahili from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. My personal and professional path continues to shape how I understand leadership, systems, and shared responsibility.
